Week 6: Blog post 2b: South America: Brazil: Indigenous groups, Amazon’s best land stewards, under federal attack

Indigenous groups, Amazon’s best land stewards, under federal attack

Summary

By the Mongabay, rights of territory for indigenous group are threatened by the federal. Agricultural lobby would be the reason for federal pressure, which would cause forest devastating and mass protest by Indigenous groups.

Michel Temer, president of Brazil, received crucial support from the ruralist group, bancada ruralista in his controversial bid for power and made it clear he would reverse the "indigenous land measures" which means suppress Indians be authorized to lands. In fact, the Amazon’s indigenous people do a better job curbing deforestation than any other group of land managers. Chasing away Indians from Amazon and convert area as a cropland will obviously devastate forest.

For this threat,on 24-28 April the initiative, called the Acampamento Terra Livre (Free Land Camp), will bring together 1,500 indigenous leaders from across the nation asserting the outcome of the current land rights is not just for Indians but for the whole world.
Temer administration and Brazil’s Congress's push over Indians are expected keep going.

Push over indigenous people in amazon region should be stop for culture diversity, ethic reason and protecting environment.
While I was traveling last year, there was a chance to talk with Aborigines in the central Australia. As they were homeless, I asked them whether it is uncomfortable to live in the street. They told me how life of Indigenous people now are and the cultures and legacies like cooking method, rituals inherited over generations but now almost have been lost. Later in the museum, I could see what government at that moment did to Aborigines. Worst thing in my think was forced race mixing which means taking aborigine baby from there parents by force and grow them with white people to eradicate 'black skin color'. I believe there would not much difference between Amazon Indians and Aborigines as also proved in articles as well.
Amazon is the most important place for purifying, producing oxygen and biodiversity. Amazon, taking 20% of whole oxygen producing in the earth, has more than 15 thousands of species.
Thus Brazilian Government should find other way not repressing Indians and devastating Amazons.
